C:A PROJECT COCEPT NOTE
PROJECT CONCEPT NOTE The project “Sustainable development of Green Schools and Forest in the community owned land areas “is to be implemented by NGO called “The Foundation for Peoples Health and Environmental Conservation Tanzania (FOPHEC TANZANIA) aimed at imparting knowledge, behavior and skills to school children and general public in Mzenga, Chole, Maneromango, Pugu and Kazimzumbwi in Kisarawe District in the Coast region in Tanzania. Over 50 hectares reforested from at least 15 Primary and Secondary schools. 5000 pupils trained on tree planting practices while 1000 equipped with grafting and budding technique. In order to achieve the outcome, the project intends to Conduct capacity building workshops, Purchase and distribute seeds, seedlings and tools for selected schools, establish and manage tree nurseries for timber and grafting (stock), Protect existing trees, plant and manage planted trees, conduct regular monitoring and at last prepare and submit financial and technical report . The Global Forest Resources Assessment (FRA) reports showed the world's forest area decreased by 31.6 % from 1990 and 2015. The Tanzania Forest Agency reported deforestation rate for 5.86 million hectares and the reforestation rate being fairly steady at 3 percent only in 2000 to 2015. FOPHEC TANZANIA intends to promote environmental conservation and mitigate the impact of human activities on the already protected area such as Kazimzumbwi and Pugu forest Reserve, Northern side of Nyerere National Park and the entire ecosystem. This area is one of Africa’s most vibrant biodiversity hotspot, enhancing resilience to climate changes and improving its sustainability. Several schemes adopted to reforest the land and are cherished. However, relatively little success has been registered to date because some schemes overlook the influence of human behavior towards its success as it assumes people are interested in planting and caring for trees, lacking effective strategy to ensure that trees are properly planted and cared for. The innovative and demand-driven approach to tree planting and caring is required. Within a broad tree planting project, some minor projects will be implemented such as Tree Planting Day and criteria for Green Tree Award will be set for motivating schools, teachers, and their pupils to increase their commitment to tree planting and caring. The project idea of working with Primary and Secondary Schools is time spent of 11 years in one area and are major property owner in various regions. The proper engagement with them can play a critical role in protecting, restoring and creating forests. This approach seeks to make tree planting a learning opportunity to engage in stimulation and conservation of natural resources. Teachers can also use this opportunity to explain benefits of trees on the environment. The topics in class can be reviewed as trees grow, pupils and students will become aware that they can play a role in protecting the environment through personal involvement and active engagement. The experience that will be acquired through this process will help to make intelligent decisions on environmental management, conservation and create the sense of responsibility in their behavior, both of which have contributed significantly to biodiversity and nature conservation. This kind of project has been done by our organization at Jokate Mwegelo Secondary school and next project will base on experience learned. FOPHEC TANZANIA embracing autonomous community-based environmental conservation that addresses the environmental challenges and opportunities of the Tanzanian society with localized solutions in a meaningful and sustainable way adopted in its statutory mission and vision.
